12 Crochet Frog Free Patterns (Easy Amigurumi Frogs)

A frog is a ball with two eyes on top. That is why it is the amigurumi so many people start with: there is almost no shaping, the legs are optional, and a green ball with big eyes reads as a frog the moment you look at it. The chunky chenille versions take twenty minutes.

We opened and checked each of these 12 free patterns. There are a baby frog that takes under twenty minutes, no-sew leggy frogs in chenille for craft fairs, a 7-inch cotton frog, a realistic bullfrog, a frog wearing a flower and a tiny keychain frog. Each one lists the yarn and hook the designer used.

What You’ll Need

  • Green yarn: super bulky chenille (Premier Parfait Chunky is the one most of these use) for the squishy frogs, worsted or sport cotton for the firm ones

  • Safety eyes, 12 mm for chenille frogs up to 24 mm for the big-eyed ones; black yarn for a baby's toy
  • Fiberfill, a stitch marker, a tapestry needle, pink thread or felt for the cheeks

Which One Should You Make?

For a first amigurumi, make the Mary Jay beginner frog (#1) or the Wonder Crochet little frog (#4). Thick yarn, big hook, big eyes, done in an evening.

For markets or party favours, the baby frog (#2), the mini keychain (#7) and the no-sew leggy froggy (#3) are the quick repeaters.

For a frog that looks like a frog, pick Boris the bullfrog (#9) or Tiny Curl’s frog on a lily pad (#8); for a gift that gets a smile, the flower frog (#5).

FAQ

Why does my crochet frog look like a ball?

Because it is one; the eyes make it a frog. Place the two eyes high and close together on top of the head, not on the front, and add a stitched smile well below them. Most of the patterns here put the eyes on two small bumps crocheted into the head, which is the trick.

What yarn do the viral chenille frogs use?

Premier Parfait Chunky, a super bulky polyester chenille, with a 4.5 to 6 mm hook. Five of the patterns here use it. It is soft and fast but shows every missed stitch as a hole, so keep a marker in the round.

How do I make the legs dangle?

Crochet the legs as unstuffed tubes and attach them only at the top, or crochet them straight off the body like the no-sew leggy froggy. Stuffing the legs makes them stick out instead of hanging.

Make the twenty-minute baby frog first; by the time the eyes go in you will already be planning a whole pond.
