A puff flower is one of the quickest ways to add something pretty to a hat, bag or blanket. Each petal is a single puff stitch: a few loops pulled up in the same place and closed together, so the flower is done in one round.
Below you learn the puff stitch first, then make the flower, a little centre and a leaf.

Crochet Puff Flower Step by Step
What You’ll Need
- Sport / fine (size 2) cotton yarn: DK (size 3) cotton in pink, yellow and green, small amounts
- 3.5 mm crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
- Optional: a pin back or hair clip
- Tapestry needle, sewing pins and a stitch marker
The finished size depends on your yarn and hook: thicker yarn and a bigger hook make a bigger piece.
Abbreviations (US terms)
- MR magic ring
- sc single crochet
- inc increase: 2 sc in the same stitch
- dec decrease (an invisible decrease gives the smoothest finish)
- ch chain
- sl st slip stitch
- puff puff stitch: (yarn over, insert hook, pull up a loop) 4 times in the same place, yarn over and pull through all 9 loops, ch 1 to close
- hdc half double crochet
- dc double crochet
- R round; Row row worked flat; the number in brackets is the stitch count at the end
Learn the Puff Stitch and Make the Flower
Keep the loops loose and the same height; tight loops make it hard to pull through at the end.

Flower (pink, make 1)
- Make a magic ring. Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch).
- Round 1: (puff in the ring, ch 2) 6 times. Pull the ring closed and slip stitch to the top of the first puff (6 petals).
- Fasten off, leaving a tail to sew.
Centre, Leaf and Finishing

- Ch 1 at the tip and work the same stitches back along the other side of the chain in reverse. Slip stitch to the start and fasten off.
- Sew the yellow centre to the middle of the flower.
- Sew the leaf behind one petal.
- Sew the flower to a hat or bag, or glue it to a pin back or hair clip.
FAQ
Why is my puff stitch hard to close?
Pull each loop up to the same height and keep them loose. A slightly bigger hook helps.
Can I make more petals?
Yes: 5 to 8 petals all work. Work the same number of puffs and chain-2 spaces in the ring.
What can I use puff flowers for?
Hats, bags, blanket corners, hair clips, brooches and gift wrap.
