14 Crochet Snake Free Patterns

  • by

A crochet snake might be the easiest amigurumi animal there is. Most of them are one long tube of single crochet with a head at one end and a tail at the other. That makes them perfect for beginners, scrap yarn, and kids who want a long, wiggly friend to drape over their shoulders.

We opened and checked every pattern below, and all 14 are free to make. You will find rainbow snakes, a tiny keychain snake, a poppable fidget snake, cute chibi snakes and giant plush snakes that are over 5 feet long.

FAQ

How long does it take to crochet a snake?
A small snake in sport or worsted yarn can take 2 to 4 hours. Giant snakes in blanket yarn work up faster per inch but are much longer, so plan on a weekend. Since most snakes are plain rounds of single crochet, they are easy to pick up and put down.

How do I stop the stuffing showing through?
Use a hook one or two sizes smaller than the yarn label suggests. Tight stitches keep fiberfill hidden. Stuff a little at a time as you go, instead of all at the end. Long snakes are much easier to stuff evenly that way.

Can I make a crochet snake longer or shorter?
Yes. Most snake patterns have a section of plain rounds in the middle of the body. Just repeat those rounds until the snake is the length you want, then work the tail. You may need a little more yarn, so buy an extra skein for long snakes.

Grab a skein in your favorite color and let your first snake start wiggling off the hook.
